# Does Google Maps notify you when someone views your location?

A direct answer, followed by the one notification feature Google Maps does offer.

No. Google Maps does not send a notification each time someone opens your shared location. It only sends alerts for arrivals and departures from a specific place, and only if that notification was set up in advance - regular views are silent.

Google Maps location sharing is silent by default: the person you shared with can open your location at any time, and you won't know they looked.

## The one exception

Per [Google's own Location Sharing help pages](https://support.google.com/maps/answer/11966807), you can set up a notification for when someone arrives at or leaves a specific place, like home or work. That's a place-based alert, not a general "someone viewed you" notification - and it has to be configured ahead of time, for a specific location, not turned on generally.

## If you want to know

glancy was built around exactly this gap: every access to your location sends a notification, with no place-based setup required - see [access notifications](/en/features/access-notifications) and how it compares in [glancy vs. Google Maps](/en/alternatives/google-maps).
